Why not try it? It is stock # 1060-7. Hope you will really take care of yourself from now on. And I hope you do come to Hawaii, best wishes!
Q: My husband has chronic fatigue, and he needs some herbal viagra, what can you suggest? Lonesome in Delaware
A: Chronic fatigue is a tough one. Our diet is the most important factor for improving adrenal function and energy, but also the most overlooked, according to nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman, M.S., author of The 40/30/30 Phenomenon (Keats). "Many people who are fatigued use stimulant herbs and other natural remedies to give them temporary energy, but they don't look at the underlying cause of their energy problem, which is usually their diet," she says.
Since my own husband suffers from Chronic Fatigue from time to time we supplement and through the years we've found we need to change supplements, but we stick to a good diet.
We realize this is a problem of over- stressed adrenals, and since blood sugar balance is key, we watch processed carbohydrates such as sugar, sweets , white sugar/flour; even caffeine. Because these cause blood sugar to rise quickly. We try to eat balanced meals like fruits with protein from animal and vegetable sources, and with healthy fats such as flaxseed oil, nuts and olive oil.Stick to the healthy carbs (whole wheat/wild rice --not the white rice), etc.).
I hope you will send me a follow up letter and let us know how he is doing if he uses any of the tips my husband has benefitted from. And I hope he improves--SOON.
Vitamin C ascorbates is a must for us, and the B-complex vitamins, known as the antistress nutrients, can effectively boost energy. For instance, did you know Pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) is often considered food for the adrenals because many adrenal hormones can't be made without it. Exhausted adrenal glands produce low amounts of adrenal hormones, supplementing his diet with pantothenic acid often helps improve adrenal function and energy?
These nutrients enhance adrenal function and allow the body to cope with stress more effectively. The B vitamins also are necessary to help the body metabolize food into energy. Zinc and manganese are needed to form enzymes that allow the body to absorb and properly utilize B vitamins and vitamin C, according to Gittleman.
We both take Korean ginseng from Nature's Sunshine, this helps his energy level. In combination with some vitamins and minerals, 80 mg of ginseng per day was found to effectively reduce fatigue in a double-blind trial (Le Gal M, Cathebras P, Struby K. Pharmaton capsules in the treatment of functional fatigue: A double-blind study versus placebo evaluated by a new methodology. Phytother Res 1996;10:49?53).
Korean ginseng may also help men with erectile dysfunction. A double-blind trial in Korea found that 1,800 mg per day of Asian ginseng for three months helped improve libido and the ability to maintain an erection in men with erectile dysfunction( Choi HK, Seong DH, Rha KH. Clinical efficacy of Korean red ginseng for erectile dysfunction. Int J Impotence Res 1995;7:181?6).
I did several years research on Oriental herbs and was amazed at what I found.
Q:Dear Herb lady: I don't know where to start improving my health
Any suggestions?
Stumped in NYC
A: Yes, perhaps you can go to my webpage (see link below) to my on-line store and take an on-line Health Analysis
Questionnaire. It's free and pretty revealing, and you will get on-line expert suggestions, too.
Q:Did you ever teach a seminar in Atlanta, or Boston? I think I was one of your students! If so, I will be visiting a friend in Hawaii soon and wonder what classes you currently offer? And where could I find out? I'm "Interested " in Boston.
A:Dear interested: Yes, I've taught classes and seminars in Atlanta, and all around the Boston area. For my old friend Bill Fage, amongst others. Here is a list of my current classes:
CLASSES/SEMINARS
Iridology I
A comprehensive study into the iris signs/markings, colorations, lesions, etc. Using first drawing to recognize the zone or iris sign and then students will be viewing dozens of actual iris photographs of these signs or markings (all photos from actual case histories).
Students will also learn what natural process, remedy, herb vitamin, etc. is needed to assist the body toward the healing process. Students will need a pen-lite (try Walmart), as the last part of the class will be a hands-on analysis of each other?s iris. Minimum of 10 students (and total count must be an even number).
Iridology II
Through the use of actual case history photos, this class will examining advanced signs and an in-depth study of heart/caradic signs/ crypt signs will be discussed, as well. Further clarification of color changes in the iris; polarity (negative and positive foods discussed) , nutrition; cleansing and fasting will also be covered. Could be combined with Iridology I for a week-end seminar.
In addition, , although NOT iridology, I will share with you, sclera signs and will touch on pupil tonis as well. I use both in my iridolgy for 2nd and 3rd opinions when studying the iris. Prerequisite Iridology I.
Mastering Herbalism I-VI:
From Aloe to Zinc containing herbs, while we learn I will share with you amazing stories from my own 20 years of assisting clients. All the while you're learning the ABC?s of herbs, and how to make practical application. Topics include: Herbal First Aid, tinctures, salves, making herbal pills, boluses, etc. No prerequisite --minimum 10 students.
Healing Herbs and Body Systems:
This class (six sessions) will discuss each of the body?s systems: Digestive/Intestional, Urinary, Immune, Glandular, Nervous, Respiratory, Circulatory, and Structural and which nutrients can assist each to remain in tip top shape or to return to health. No prerequisite --minimum 10 students.
In addition to these classes, I am happy to host Herbal Hours--FREE of Charge! Please contact me--via email and let me know how I can assist you further.
Q: Dear Herb lady: I have suffered for years with migraine headaches. Now our daughter has them, too. Is there any herbal product that will help us?
A: Paul Harvey talked about this herb on his radio program a few years ago...what is it?
Feverfew! the one I have recommended for years is a High-Parthenolide (a major chemical component in Feverfew).
Feverfew , is commonly known as Bachelor?s Buttons, and contains niacin and iron and provides nutrition to the central nervous system.
This herb offers nutritional support for migraine headaches. High-Parthenolide Feverfew delivers 500 mcg of parthenolide in a total of 212 mg of feverfew?from a specially grown ?high parthenolide? feverfew leaf?per capsule.
Parthenolides are sesquiterpene lactones, the major dietary components of feverfew. Take 1 capsule daily. Do not take feverfew during pregnancy.Stock No. 288-1 (100)
Read up on Feverfew and see if it is for you...many people tell me they can't be w/out it; and most herbalist recommend you take it DAILY (as directed on label) to prevent migrain(s).
For pain of an already existing headache think:
Migraquel?. This is a natural homeopathic remedy for the relief of pain and other symptoms associated with throbbing, debilitating cluster headaches.
Try what the label suggests. Take 10?15 drops under the tongue every 10?15 minutes, or as needed, until symptoms improve. Then decrease to hourly, then to four times daily until symptoms are relieved.
For children under 12, consult your health care professional. Do not take this product for more than five days. If symptoms do not improve after 10 days, consult your health care professional. If you are pregnant or nursing, consult your health care provider.Stock No. 8745-7
I took the Migraquel once when I had a "classic" headache. I had bright zig-zag lights off to my right side and was just sitting down to a nice meal with company. I jumped up and took it as directed and with in a few minutes--no more headache...no more bright zig-zags. And the evening was saved!
If you try these hope they work for you!I glad I learned to Kick my migraine problem! Hope you do , too!
Q: Is there a "miracle" herb or "magic bullet" type natural product that
I can take for rheumatoid arthritis? I'm in pain here and I expect to live
many more years! How can I live a little more pain-free?--sign me "Looking ".
A: Dear Looking: My heart goes out to you...it really does. I understand
this is a painful (auto-immune) disease ...
I frequently get clients who have this condition coming in with
prescriptions for Omega-3 essential fatty acid, written by their
physicians.
It does smell a little fishy and a lot of people "belch" it up...therefore (!)
how about this?
One thought is that many people who suffer from
osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, joint injuries and
osteoporosis may all benefit from SAMe.
You might try SAMe for RA, and see what happens!
SAMe stimulates chondrocytes to increase the production of new
cartilage, UNLIKE NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) chronically consumed
by many joint inflammation/degeneration sufferers, which actually
INHIBIT proteoglycan synthesis needed to renew cartilage and synovial
fluid .
Furthermore SAMe is actually protective of the stomach lining, while
NSAIDs tend to damage and irritate the gut lining with chronic use.
Please also consider MSM! It has under gone many years of clinical use at
Oregon Health Sciences University. They have demonstrated that MSM
provides the following pain relief and anti-inflammatory benefits without
serious side effects.
a. Inhibition of pain impulses along nerve fibers (analgesia )
b. Lessening of inflammation c.. Increase in blood supply
d. Reduction of muscle spasm .
e. Softening of scar tissue .
MSM is often so effective for pain relief that doctors are able to lower
the dosage of medication they prescribe for patients. Sometimes, they are
even able to discontinue the medication altogether. The end result is relief
along with fewer or no side effects that are frequently caused by
prescriptive medications.
( Follow up letter ) Sammye: it is hard for me to believe , but I am feeling much better with less pain! Thank you, thank you....
Q:Hi: I just wanted you to know after I got your information on menopause and low
energy I ordered me some C-X and TS II formulas. I haven't been taking them but a
couple of days and WOW! I can't believe I feel this good! I haven't felt this good in a
LONG time...Thank you SO MUCH! J.C., TX
A:Great! As mentioned in our emails to each other;
plant or Phyotoestrogens appear to have the unique ability to function as a weak "mimic"
of estrogen in some parts of the body, like the bone, cardiovascular system and vaginal
tissue. This quality is beneficial, as estrogen slows bone loss, tones vaginal tissue and
lowers cholesterol, possibly helping to prevent heart disease.
While estrogen benefits some parts of the body, it actually hinders other organs.
Estrogen is not beneficial to the breast or uterus, for example, because it stimulates cell
growth in these areas, which could lead to cancer. Estrogen "bound" breasts are those that
get "sore/tender" during periods and that is not good.
Another benefit of phytoestrogens is that they serve to block estrogen in the breast
and uterus, where estrogen is unwanted. Isn't God smart?
There is on-going research to suggest that estrogen replacement may slow
Alzheimers and aging of the brain. Research is still needed to determine whether
phytoestrogens will provide this benefit.
Phytoestrogens are often confused with natural hormones -- steroids that are made in
a manufacturing setting, from compounds found in plants.
Natural hormones are made from compounds in plants, but converted in the
laboratory to a hormone that is identical in its molecular structure to the human
hormone.
For example, a compound called diosgenin that has been shown to maintain healthy
blood cholesterol levels, may be extracted from the Mexican Wild Yam, and then
converted to a hormone in the manufacturing laboratory. This then becomes a drug.
A: I'm so happy to tell you --Herbs Work--alternative medicine should always be considered first!
Q:I have an on-going yeast infection. I have taken medication for over 6 months
from my doctor and he says to try it one more time. I'm at my wit's end! What can I
possibly do that will rid me of this?"
A: Well, I'm sorry to learn about your problem! I know a yeast infection can be
terribly uncomfortable. Especially a vaginal one!
There are many herbs that will kill yeast. This problem is commonly know as
"candida" . There are homeopathics that will be effective , as well.
When someone comes into my office we had a ready supply of three things:
Homeopathic remedy "Candida"
Flora Force(--see below).
and Caprylimune
Caprylimune is a dietary supplement that contains a lot of yeast/fungus fighters: Like
Pau d'Arco herb, garlic, and Golden seal root.
AND!!! Watch your diet--I would avoid:
All sugars; fruit for at least 6 weeks
All yeast and yeast products (watch store bought vitamins --lots contain yeast)
And please be advised it can be passed back and forth between husband and wife
during intercourse...
Remember proper nutrition is important! Avoid yeast food like bread and beer. Also avoid vinegar foods and SWEETS!
Stick with it--it can be avoided. And You might like to know one single dose of
prescription anti-biotics can kill off good bacterian in the colon for one year; this gives
candida a great chance to take over and make you miserable. Please email me again.
Q: I wrote you last year, and sad to say, didn?t take you up on your suggestion. I
finally have that infection in my bladder from June last year cleared up. Now I have to
drink 2-3quart of water.I am doing really good on my coffee. Any other suggestion for
bladder problems? The doctor said that it is very common now. Thanks Brigette
A: Yes, it is common for this system to become over-laded with toxins and when it
breaks down, it can poison the entire body. Also many women going through menopause
have a lot of re-occuring bladder problems, too.
This formula I?m going to tell you about is one I have suggested many times for
incontience. It works wonders for the elderly, who seem especially grateful for it! But
that is not all it does for the system!
This formula I have used in my office for quite sometime is JP-X. One of the old
stand-bys of famous herbalist/doctor, Dr. John Christopher. (In fact, all the X
formulations I use are his).
JP stands for Juniper/Parsley, and it is a diuretic and antiseptic. It is used to restore
(for
men) weakened sexual function; difficult or scanty urination (and for older men
"dribbling"--or
losing urine) .
You might want to use Flora Force and it's "friendly bacteria" to re-establish the
proper balance to the colon. A
large body of research over the past one hundred years has demonstrated the preventive
value
of eating foods fermented with Lactobacillior and their cousins, Bifido- bacteria. Eating
these
friendly bacteria prevents infection due to viruses or pathogenic bacteria and preserves
intestinal
permeability in the face of infection or other types of injury, and can prevent
antibiotic-induced
diarrhea and travelers diarrhea and can lower serum
cholesterol levels, according to Dr.Galland in his column,"Using Friendly Flora,"
Lactobacilli and
Bifido-bacteria also show anti-cancer activity, by two mechanisms:they inhibit the growth
or
activity of cancer-promoting bacteria and some strains actually
produce chemicals which inhibit tumor growth.
If this persists you might want to temporarily add formula for infection (like my
favorite IF-C) .
Take care and email me again!
Q: I had an exam, and my doctor gave me a sample of AXID; can you tell me about
this
medication? Thanks. M.K.
A: Axid or NIZATIDINE-ORAL
This medication blocks secretion of acid from the stomach. It is used to
treat and prevent ulcers, to treat gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GERD), and
to treat conditions associated with excessive acid secretion.
SIDE EFFECTS: Sleepiness, fatigue, sweating and itchiness may occur as
your body adjusts to the medication. If any of these
medication.
PRECAUTIONS: This medication should be used only if clearly needed
during pregnancy. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. Since small
amounts of this medication are found in breast milk, consult your doctor before
breastfeeding. Tell your doctor if you have any pre-existing liver disease, kidney
disease or any allergies. Elderly persons may be more sensitive to the effects of
this medication. Do not change your dose without your doctor's approval.
Cigarette smoking can affect this medication. Tell your doctor if you smoke and if
you stop or start smoking while taking this medication.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: This medication can affect how your body
responds to other medications. It is important to tell your doctor of any
over-the-counter or prescription medication you may take including antacids,
alcohol, heart medication, blood thinners, medication for anxiety, blood pressure,
seizures, diabetes, asthma, pain or depression.
NOTES:
Laboratory tests may be done periodically while taking this
medication to monitor results and prevent side effects.
Her response is below:
Thank you for the info on the AXID; Wow! Doesn't look too good if I want to
live healthy very long. And I wonder if I have too much or too little acid. I have
not had this problem with reflux the past few days. Maybe I need to get into
some relaxation techniques or yoga.
Oh, Sammye I have terrible indigestion with frequent belching and
discomfort .M.K.
A: Dear M.K. : Why not try what so many in our office have used? It's AG-X.
TRADITIONAL
USE: Chinese Anti-gas for stressed digestion / Improve internal circulation / Supports
pancreas
and urinary system / Gas ,Bloating / Nausea as well as Cravings for sweets .
Great for just the symptoms you'd described!
Q: How can I be sure of the quality on products I purchase?"
A: Good question! What can you do to check a product's safety record? According to
information on the FDA's Web site on dietary supplements, to help protect themselves,
consumers should:
- Examine labels and ingredients lists.
- Remember a product labeled "natural" isn't necessarily safe. Many "natural" things
can be
toxic--mushrooms, for example-- may produce very dangerous side effects in certain
situations.
Many herbs act in the same way as prescription drugs. so never mix herbs and
prescription
drugs.
- Look also at the manufacturer or distributor. Nationally known food and drug
manufacturers, for example, may have tighter controls because these companies already
have
established standards for their other products. Nature's Sunshine is the world's leading
manufacturer of encapsulated herbs and supplements!
- Remember you can always write to the manufacturer to find out more about the
manufacturing conditions. Nature's Sunshine has set the standard in quality control. Not
only do
they spend millions on quality control each year, they meet or exceed pharmaceutical
standard
for their products.
And you might be surprised to learn Nature's Sunshine has doctors, herbalist, AND
pharmacists on staff, and always keeps abreast of what herbs are on the GRAS (Generally
recognized as safe) list and followes the U.S. Pharmacopoeia's standards.
As for Nature's Rx sells the best we are proud to say, "You can buy cheaper--but you
can't
buy better."
Imagine discovering the ginseng root you'd been taking was actually ginseng
BRANCHES
which have none of the properties of the root. Or that your herbal tea contained a toxic
herb that
caused hundreds to go to emergency rooms across the country;or that ground glass was
found
in your bee pollen;or harmful bacteria that could cause death if your immune system was
weak.
Think about having laced in with your licorice root; or other products "un-exceptable
levels of
lead". I have actually received letters informing me of
just these very things! I received the letters because I sold herbal supplements...but I'm
proud to
say that I've never sold any of the products mentioned in the letters--AND I've never
received a
re-call from Nature's Sunshine. They make sure before hand!
The latest buzz on the health scene is over SAMe. An independant lab randomly
tested
aouot 40 brands and many were inconsistant on the amount of SAMe from capsule to
capsule;
but also some labels were misleading; giving the impression that the capsules contained
twice
the amount that they really contained!
So, dear ones...LET THE BUYER BEWARE..."
In our store by the EXIT is a sign stating "Knowledge is POWER.
Q: I'm desparate...I was in a car wreck about two years ago, with head injuries, etc. I can't seem to get rid of all the anger that I'm feeling. My husband wants me to see a shrink...and that just makes me madder! Sign me: HELP
A: Dear "HELP": If your sure this is not a physical result of the accident let me say...I don't want to stand between you and your husband, this is a decision you need to make with his help (and prayer).
The liver is the anger center and anger is a very strong emotion.
Let me quote from the book "Feelings Buried Alive Never Die"
Liver:
Feelings of unresolved anger
Feelings of resentment & pettiness
Being judgemental
Critical thoughts
Not forgiving self & others
Feelings of INJUSTICE AND REVENGE
Feelings of self-condemnation
Feelings of regret over the past/sadness
Being possessive
A hand-out in my office goes like this:
The liver is the anger center and anger is a very strong emotion.
LIV-C [Wood Reducing] Tiao He
TRADITIONAL USES:Migraines, nervousnesses, fatigue, cold hands/feet, menstrual cramps, tension in chest, sore throat, muscle aching, gastric ulcer
LIV-C TARGET USE:* Feelings of unresolved anger *Feelings of resentment and pettiness * Being judgemental *Critical thoughts
If you'd like more information on Chinese herbals watch for my upcoming book. And keep persisting--you can find relief!
As a personal note....I have found that those who succeed in becoming emotionally free and healthy are always the ones who believe in a "higher power, or Creator" .
Q: I have been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. I am terribly afraid of any kind of surgery! Do You have ANY suggestions?
A: I started having carpal tunnel symptons when I began using the computer so much writing for my publications over two years ago.
I had great results using B-6 (along with multi B), Target Endurance and Herbal CA-ATC. I really feel like these need to be used together for better results. Then I added MSM and I do believe that the MSM was the missing ingredient to my program. I could tell an even more significant improvement once I started taking it. I still use the computer most all day, but only rarely have flare ups and no longer need to take these supplements on a regular basis.
A note about B-6---you tell you exceeded your need for it because most people start having vivid dreams! So, remember to use it WITH the B complex! Let me know if this helps, as many of my clients who have tried it--tell me it is a thing of the past.
Q:I am a 31 year old female nonsmoker who has recently been diagnosed with Stage
IV adenocarcinoma of the lung and spine. I am currently undergoing chemotherapy with
Taxol and cisplatin. I have been reading about the Essiac herb remedy. What do you
know of this? I am taking a multivitamin, echinecea/astragalus/reishi combo, garlic and a
garden essential capsule. I am also taking barley green drink, herbal fiberblend and am on
an herbal bowel regimen. I am open to any suggestions. I would like to start CoQ10 but
it's so expensive. I am from Iowa and I heard about your site from a distant cousin .
A: Rene Caisse was a nurse living in Canada who for almost sixty years
treated thousands of people with an herbal remedy she called Essiac. She discovered this
remedy through a patient in the hospital where she worked who had been cured of breast
cancer. The patient had used an herbal remedy given her by an Ojibway herbalist. Rene
left the hospital in 1922 at age 33, and went to Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada where she
began administering Essiac to all who came to her. The majority of those whom she
treated came on referral with letters from their physicians certifying they had incurable or
terminal forms of cancer and that they had been given up by the medical profession as
untreatable.
She administered Essiac both orally and by injection. In cases where there was
severe damage to life support organs, her patients died - but they lived far longer than the
medical profession had predicted, and, more significantly, they lived pain free .
The Canadian Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Parliament became involved.
Friends, former patients, and grateful families petitioned Canadian officials for Rene
Caisse's right to administer the remedy to anyone who asked for it without the threat of
interference from authorities. Fifty-five thousand signatures were collected on the
petition. In 1938, Essiac came within three votes of being legalised by the Ontario
government as a remedy for terminal cancer patients.
Thank you for your letter! Please continue your meds and I like what you are doing so far!
ASTRAGALUS root or (Huangqi): In Traditional Chinese Medicine
( TCM ) it?s felt the functions of this herb is: 1. To release toxins and promote healing; 2. To promote water metabolism and
reduce edema .
Indications : 1. Deficient of the spleen and lungs manifested as poor
appetite, loose stool, shortness of breath and lassitude. 2. Manifested as chills and
sweating. 3. Failure of the spleen in controlling blood manifested as blood in the stool
and uterine bleeding. 4.Deficiency of blood manifested as palpitations, anxiety, insomnia
and forgetfulness. 5.Spontaneous sweating due to exterior deficiency. 6. Night sweating .
7. Deficiency of the spleen leading to water manifested as edema and scanty urine. 8.
Boils and ulcers manifested as sores that have formed pus but have not drained or healed
well. 9. Retardation of circulation of the blood .
And GANODERMA lucidum (Ling Zhi or Ling Chih): Reishi mushroom.
TCM says this is to be used on all "Disturbed Shen"
problems. In TCM there is a "quality" associated with each major organ of the body. The quality associated with the heart is "tranquility/inner peace". Disturbed Shen the Orentials tell us, results in problems like Insomnia, high blood pressure and cholesterol.
In addition, it is said to "nourish" the blood, to proide vital energy, and is
frequently the treatment for asthma, chronic weakness or debility.
*Scientific Studies: have led to mushroom extracts as approved anti-cancer
drugs in Japan and modern cultivation methods have made them easier to
procure. Modern tests show: reishi can build resistance to radiation, and is being
used to treat chronic hepatitis, high cholesterol levels, heart disease, tumors and
duodenal ulcers. The tumor-inhibiting effects is throught to be from the
polysacrides activating white blood cell macrophages which filter/destroys
cancers.
It has been found to strengthen body
own defenses allowing it to deal with imbalances; broad spectrum adaptogen.
Tests by by Dr. Mori-shige, Japanese surgeon, at Pauling Instituet
gave Reishi with vitamin C results showed dramatically improvement. It has
been determined that it lowers B/P,/cholesterol levels and enables heart to
function with less oxygen therefore good to relieve anagina pain, and
athersclerosis. It has been found to possess anti-allergic factors Ganoderic acid C, as well as Ling Zhi-8 , although it may be a source of sensitivity, itself, to
some. Dozens of studies over the past 25 years have been carried out with the
reishi on humans.
And it is thought to be beneficial for a wide array of disorders
including dizziness, insomnia, rhinitis, anorexia, mental disease caused by
enviromental stress, Alzheimer's disease, liver failure, hyperlipidemia, and
diabetes. The mushroom itself and herbal preparations from the mushroom have
been used in China for stamina, asthma, insomnia, as well. [Hobbs, ibid. pg. 101]
Univ. of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio's Dr. Wm. Stavinoha, Ph. D.,
professior of pharmacology said the mushroom works somewhat like aspirin or
hyudrocortisone, but with fewer and milder side effects. Medical paractioners at
one Texas clinic suggest reishi for some cases of arthritis, recurring muscle
spasms and chronic pain-and report that about 80% of the time they provide
significant relief.
It has been a prized immune defense enhancer in China for over 500 years and until recently hard to procure. One Japanese man has spent 15 years
getting the mushroom to grow in sawdust, Shigeaki Mori, developed an elaborate
method and now the once rare mushroom is now successfully cultivated. In
fact, kits are now available to the average person for growing the mushrooms on
sawdust or other kits use small logs impregnated with the fungii. An interesting
fact, that those who have grown the reishi for decades have to eat what they do
not sell, and have a very low incident of cancer.
The above is from my upcoming book , Unlocking the Mysteries of Chinese
Herbs. (Watch for a publication date on this site).
Wishing you the best! Let me know how you are progressing.
Be sure to tell your doctor which supplements and over-the-counter medications you are taking when you visit! This applies to everyone!

Anesthesiologists Warn: If You're Taking
Herbal Products, Tell Your Doctor Before Surgery News Release, March 24,1999
ASA PRESS RELEASE: Researchers Warn of Potential Herbal-Anesthesia Interactions
Presented by Charles H. McLeskey, M.D. at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting.
DALLAS - The troubling tendency among consumers to equate "herbal" with "harmless" could put those who take herbal supplements at risk for unexpected complications if they have surgery, researchers cautioned at the American Society of Anesthesiologists annual meeting.
The explosive growth of the herbal industry is outpacing the growth of the orthodox pharmaceutical industry, Charles H. McLeskey, M.D., chair of anesthesiology and director of perioperative services at Scott & White Hospital of Texas A & M University, said. The trend has important implications for anesthesiologists and surgical patients alike. "Millions of people are taking many herbal medications, and we don't know enough about these products, their effects and interactions," Dr. McLeskey said.
For that reason, surgical patients should make sure their anesthesiologist knows all of the medications they are taking, including herbal supplements and over-the-counter remedies, and anesthesiologists should ask specifically about herbals in planning anesthesia care, he said. "Some herbals can interact with anesthetics and have adverse effects, while others pose potential risks regardless of their interaction with anesthesia," Dr. McLeskey said. "In either case, the potential for harm warrants precautions."
In a recent survey of surgical patients, among all herbs consumed, the most commonly taken herbal was gingko biloba (32 percent), Dr. McLeskey said. Several studies link gingko biloba with an increased risk of bleeding. Used as a memory enhancer, the substance acts as an anti-coagulant (blood thinner) and may inhibit blood clotting. Poor coagulation can lead to excessive blood loss during surgery, he noted.
Other studies suggest that feverfew, used as a migraine headache remedy, interferes with blood clotting as well. Kava, an herbal used as a relaxant, may have an additive effect when combined with the sedatives anesthesiologists often give patients before and during surgery. "If patients are taking herbal products and we know about it, we can alter care, prevent problems and manage complications more easily," he said.
Many anesthesiologists recommend that their patients stop taking herbal medications two to three weeks before surgery. If that is not possible, patients should bring all of their medications and supplements with them in their original containers to the hospital. "This is important because herbals can contain several ingredients. Patients may not even be aware of what they are consuming," Dr. McLeskey said.
The survey of herbal use among surgical patients reported by Dr. McLeskey found that 17 percent of a group of 980 patients (170) were taking one or more botanical medications or "nutraceuticals," supplements not derived from plants. Of the herbal users, 55 percent took only one product and 45 percent took more than one.
The researchers believe the percentage in this study is considerably lower than current estimates for the general population (estimated at 30 percent) because patients may hesitate to admit taking these products. The fact that the patients in this study tended to be older (median age 62) and that herbal use may be more common in a younger population may also account for some of the disparity, Dr. McLeskey said.
More research is needed to understand the impact of herbal supplements on anesthesia care, Dr. McLeskey said. "As the popularity of herbals continues to grow, so will reports of allergic reactions and adverse drug-herb interactions. This survey is the first step." The researchers plan to further study the relationship between herbal consumption and coagulation status (blood clotting) in surgical patients and to determine herbal consumption in patients seeking therapy for chronic pain conditions.

Q: My husband (age 65) needs some help in the romance department--but
his doctor won't prescribe Viagra. Are these herbal versions any
good?--hoping...
A: Dear Hoping: If my husband had that problem I
would seek the cause. Does he smoke? Take medication that could be causing
the problem? I suppose you have done that, because you mentioned the
doctor--good!
I have had people bring prescriptions into my place of
business for the natural form of Yohimbine (a prescription). I personally think
this this can be a problem for some, also .
Most don't know that the herb
Yohimbe (Pausinystalia yohimbe, Corynanthe yohimbe ) can also have the
same side effects as the drug. It can be a cardiac depressant and hypertensive
(raises blood pressure). It also can have drug interactions and also should not
be consumed by persons taking any MAO inhibitor ( prescription blood pressure
drugs or antidepressants such as Marplan? Nardil? and Parnate?) . When
used with MAOI drugs there is a risk of increased hypertension. In addition, there
is no one to tell these people not take yohimbe with foods containing tyramine
(liver, cheese, red wine). Or certain diet aids and/or decongestants containing
Ephedra/ Ma Haung/ and pseudoephedrine. There is a potential risk of
increased hypertension when used with beta-adrenoceptor blocking drugs. Due
to the antihypertensive (hypotensive) action of this herb the following interactions
are possible when taken with anesthetics an increased hypotensive effect; when
taken with diuretics difficulty and hypertension may result.
But,never-fear! There are other herbs that are more than fine! Why not try
X-Action for Men it contains what some feel is the number one "safer
alternative" combination of--Argininine AND Muira Puama !
Both have been clinically studied; one study with 262 subjects were
given Muira Puama , and patients with loss of libido claimed that the treatment
had dynamic effect while 51% of patients with ED felt that Muira puama was of
benefit. These results are extremely promising and seem to indicate that Muira
puama may provide better results than yohimbine without side effects. --Printed
in the 1993 GAIA SYMPOSIUM PROCEEDINGS, NATUROPATHIC HERBAL
MEDICINE, "HerbalHealing Wisdom for the Future" May 29-31, 1993
And L-Argininine studies have proven convincing. A 4 week long trial that
involved 15 men who were all under 65 years old and inrelatively good health,
produced good results. By by the end of the second two weeks, six of the men
were reporting a marked improvement in their ability to perform sexually
(approximately 87% improvement).--Zorgniotti AW, Lizza AF. Effect of large
doses of nitric oxide precursor L-arginine, on ED . Int J Impot Res 1994; 6:
33-34.
X-Action contains more! Damiana: aids central nervous system
and hormone-secreting glands. Contains beta-sistosterol and other aromatic oils
that stimulate sexual glands, increases circulationand more!
Saw
Palmetto: has a fine reputation of being equal to the drug Proscar? for reducing
swelling of the prostate. Proscar, however, has been know to impede libido
.
X-Action for men also contains: Panax Ginseng: Enhances energy,
reduces stress; helps lower B/P as well as utilize sugar and increasing insulin
sensitivity. The endurance herb! And Ginkgo biloba: According to Dr. Libby, "
The herb we prize for enhancing memory, used for Alzheimer's world wide, is the
one to look to when men are having (ED)troubles . " In the Journal of Sex
Education and Therapy, it was reported that even men who could not be helped
by injectable medical drugs, benefited.
Then there X-Action contains
Vitamin E: Essential to healthy sexuality plays a key role in the body's
manufacturing hormones. Like ginkgo, it is an anti-oxidant that protects the
body's circulatory pathways. Like ginseng, vitamin E improves the body's use of
oxygen, and there is clinical evidence it can help prevent prostatitis.
Each
plays a unique role in health and nutrition--how about your, husband has he had
his supplements, today? Mine has!
We have seen many satisfied
clients who recommend the product to many of their friends! We get calls for it
every week! If you need a discount email me again!!! Hope this has been
helpful!
And if you will permit me to get on the soap-box for a while...I
have recently seen a disturbing trend. Having recently attended a state fair and
a gathering just today (a flea market) where ignorant persons are handing out
samples of a diet aid containg Ma Huang extract (ephedra alkaloids). They have
two pills and a glass of water and when questioned if there were any side-effects
and "can just everyone take it?" I was always told, "Sure! It's an all natural
energizer!"
How many people tired from walking around in the heat are
going to pick up the pamplet warning of the side-effect,read it and then decided
to take it or not? I can only repeat the warning above and say they do this in
ignorance...it is up to you the consumer to be educated---yes, it's "all natural" but
is it al(ways) safe for just everybody?
Q: Today after finally going to the doctor, he tells me my blood sugar level
was 210. He wants to put me on prescription drugs. I don't want to stay on
drugs for the next 30 years. I'm just 41!Mona
Mona: I feel for you! I'm
sure most of us would feel the same way!
You didn't tell me so, but I
assume you have type 2 diabetis? Often called ,"late -on- set diabetes". Mind
you I can't prescribe (as I am NOT a doctor! ) . Depending on the severity of the
disease, Type 2 diabetes can frequently be managed with proper diet AND
exercise. If diet and exercise alone are not sufficient to control the blood sugar
levels, a physician may add oral agents to the regimen.
Occasionally, insulin
injections are required to manage the disease. Frequent blood sugar monitoring
is necessary to manage the disease properly.
Normal blood sugar is
approximately 80 to 120. If the blood is checked randomly (without fasting),
blood sugars greater than 200 may be an indication of diabetes. Fasting blood
sugars (first thing in morning without any food since the night before:remember
breakfast is "BREAK " ing a Fast ) greater than 140 on more than one occasion
may also be an indication of diabetis .
Diabetes education is very
important. If you are a diabetic, it is imperative that you understand this
!!!!
But, you might want to know what people did before there were
medications for diabetis? I used to live in Texas , and know about this plant! In
fact, it is still popular among these people where ever they live!
And
perhaps we can all benefit by learning about this little herb...
This lowly
SW plant has been part of the Mexican/Indian diet for 6,000 years. These
people rely on it for food, as well as medicine. It is considered a "staple" in most
everyone's diet and is sold in all their food markets.
A typical American
diet, with its high fat content and low amout of dietary fiber, can affect the body?s
natural ability to regulate levels of glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides in the
blood. In addition, Mexican and Indians believe Nopal can have a healthy
impacton levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.
Within the last few
years scientific study has been done on the plant, to see if folk medicine had any
valid claim for it supposed "benefits." The University of Arizona spent time
researching the chemical constituants and concluded :
* After using
Nopal as part of a regular diet significant reduction was noted in blood serum
cholesterol.
* Body weight decreased in both the obese and diabetic
persons using Nopal on a regular basis (those with normal weight did not lose
weight ).
* When used daily, Nopal diminished blood sugar levels when
taken orally.
Nopal is a source of ascorbic acid, and bioflavnoids, fiber,
and gums that absorb dietary fats and excessive sugars and is well suited for the
glandular system, especially benefiting to the pancreas and liver.
Furthermore scientific studies reveal Nopal contains 17different amino acids,
including all eight of the esssential amino acids that cannot be manufactured by
the human body; as well as, calcium and beta carotene. Nature's Sunshine
has combined two species to bring a unique product to the marketplace.
Opuntia ficus-indica, and Opunta streptacantha. Complementaryproducts
include: HY-A, NBS-AV, and PBS.
Mona,diabetes education is VERY
important. If you are a diabetic, it is essential that you know the symptoms of
high sugar (hyperglycemia), and low sugar (hypoglycemia); and how to "properly
" manage them .
Without proper treatment, the complications ofdiabetes
can be life threatening! It is the forth leading cause of death in the U.S. Those
who have Type 2 diabetes may find that injuries/cuts,etc. are slow to heal. This
may lead to gangrene and amputation.
Decreased vision, another
symptom, may result in retinopathy, cataracts, and glaucoma, and blindness.
Heart disease or kidney failure may result from poor circulation .
I hope
this has given you something to think about. Take this information to your doctor
and discuss it with him! Or perhaps you can find an M.D., that is nutritionally
minded and can guide you? Don't play around with your health-- and thank you
for your email! Remember, knowledge is power!
Q:Where can I go on the internet to find "scientific" data on supplements?
A: Lot's of places--but chek out the "new" webpage for International Bibliographic Information of Dietary Supplements (IBIDS). It's a database of published scientific literature to assist researchers and the pubic in locating credible scientific literature on dietary supplements.
Q: What can I do for varicose veins, I am embarrassed. And what causes them?
A:Varicose veins are two to four times more common in women than in men. They
are caused by inadequate vessel walls or venous valves cause varicose veins. They may
also be caused by an obstacle in a vein, which prevents blood from returning from the
lower legs to the heart.
Other factors which may contribute to varicose veins:
- Inactivity--desk job, lack of exercise
- Family predisposition
- Concussion / or injury to legs
- Changes in hormones (pregnancy)
- Tight clothing causing constriction
-Advancing age
Deep vericose veins may cause aching in the legs with prolonged standing. Support
stockings, elevating feet and legs, and exercise may be helpful.
Something natural you might try is:
Veri-Gone
A unique combination of standardized herbal extracts and nutrients specifically intended
to support vein health , strength, and resilence. Continued use should improve hemorridal
conditions and the apperance of varicose and spider veins.
Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) Traditionally, many of the aerial parts of the horse
chestnut tree, including the seeds, leaves, and bark, were used in medicinal preparations.
Modern extracts of horse chestnut are usually extracts of the seeds that are high in the active
Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies): Horse
chestnut leaves have been used as a cough remedy and to reduce fevers. They were also
believed to reduce pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. Poultices of the seeds
were used topically to treat skin ulcers and skin cancer. Other uses include the internal and
external application for problems of venous circulation, including varicose veins and
hemorrhoids, also used to treat phlebitis.
Active constituents: Extracts of the seeds are the source of a saponin known as aescin, which
has been shown to promote circulation through the veins. Aescin promotes normal tone to the
walls of the veins, thereby promoting return of blood to the heart. This has made both topical and
internal horse chestnut extracts popular in Europe for the treatment of chronic venous
insufficiency and varicose veins. Great for hemorrhoids and varicose veins!
Aescin also possesses anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to reduce edema
(swelling with fluid) following trauma, particularly those following sports injuries, surgery, and
head injury.
Horse chestnuts also contain flavonoids, sterols, and tannins. Double-blind human
studies have shown that aescin extracts promote rapid healing of bruises. These studies have
shown that oral horse chestnut extracts support people with chronic venous insufficiency. Those
suffering edema after surgery have also found relief from topical application of horse chestnut
extracts according to preliminary studies.
Only standardized extracts should be used internally. Horse chestnut seed extracts standardized
for aescin content (20%) --like our Veri-Gone .
You might ask:Are there any side effects or interactions? Internal use of purified horse chestnut extracts
standardized for aescin at the doses listed above is generally safe. There have been two reports
of kidney damage in persons consuming very large quantities of aescin. Therefore just to be on
the safe side--Horse chestnut should be avoided by anyone with liver or kidney disease.
Its
internal use is also contraindicated during pregnancy and lactation.
But wait, Our Veri-Gone has more! 50 mg Butcher's Broom (Ruscus aculeatus) , a member of
the lily family, is often used for maintaining a healthy circulatory system, and for controlling the
inflammatory process. As well as 97 mg Vitamin C .
Veri-Gone also contains:
BIOFLAVONOIDS * HESPERIDIN * RUTIN * They are vital in their ability to increase the
strength of the capillaries (blood vessels) and to regulate their permeability. They assist Vitamin
C in keeping collagen, the intercellular "cement" in healthy condition; are essential for the proper
absorption and use of vitamin C; prevents Vitamin C from being destroyed in the body by
oxidation; beneficial in hypertension; helps hemorrhages and ruptures in the capillaries and
connective tissues and builds a protective barrier against infections. Quercetin is a very highly
concentrated form of Bioflavonoids derived from citrus fruit ; lemon bioflavnoids, etc.
DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May result in varicose veins, tendency to bruise and bleed easily,
appearance of purplish spots on the skin.
200 mg Rutin is a naturally powerful bioflavonoid which acts synergistically with Vitamin C to
help maintain a healthy immune system. Rutin helps strengthen the capillaries, prevent bruising,
and is useful in the treatment of varicose veins. Derived from the eucalyptus plant,or buckwheat,
Rutin is a natural source of the bioflavonoid Quercetin. Quercetin affects a variety of human
enzyme systems, is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, and protects cell membranes.
And: 200 mg Hesperidin : Hesperidin is one of the bioflavinoids, naturally occurring nutrients usually
found in association with Vitamin C. The bioflavinoids, sometimes called Vitamin P, were found
to be the essential component in correcting this bruising tendency and improving the
permeability and integrity of the capillary lining. These bioflavinoids include Hesperidin, Citrin,
Rutin, Flavones, Flavonals, Calechin, and Quercetin.
Q: Recently I was diagnosed with the H-pylori problem. I took the prescribed
antibiotics which didn't work. I also have to much acid in my stomach. This leads to acid
reflux and a burning in my stomach. Is there some natural remedy that I could take for this
condition?. The Doctor recommends Prilosec which is extremely expensive.Thank you for
any suggestions. F.F.
A:Dear F.F. : Helping the body balance stomach acid, naturally is very important!
We have a product: Stomach-Comfort gives you a natural way to respond to
digestive problems. Stomach-Comfort is a combination of natural ingredients
that helps neutralize acid, soothe the stomach, improve digestion and control
acid reflux, a condition in which stomach acid backwashes into the esophagus
via the lower esophageal sphincter.
The NSP Advantage Stomach-Comfort
can help soothe burning sensations in the stomach and lessen uncomfortable
acidic tastes in the throat and mouth?problems often triggered by foods like
alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, high-fat meals, orange juice and tomato juice.
Stomach-Comfort, which contains no harmful ingredients like aluminum,
offers natural relief. Stomach-Comfort contains an array of healthful and natural
ingredients: calcium carbonate, alginic acid (from kelp), slippery elm bark, ginger
papaya fruit, licorice root concentrate and wintergreen oil.
This formula is alkaline in nature and helps reduce the pain commonly
associated with what is called ?heartburn.? Alginic acid, which is converted to
sodium alginate, helps protect the mucus lining of the esophagus against acid
irritation, thus reducing the discomfort associated with reflux. Slippery elm bark
coats and soothes the digestive tract while ginger root, papaya fruit and licorice
root concentrate work synergistically to aid proper digestion. Licorice root has
also long been used to support healthy stomach function. Wintergreen oil,
meanwhile, gives Stomach-Comfort a refreshing and pleasant taste.
Recommendation: One bottle of Stomach-Comfort contains 60 tablets. We take 2 tablets when we experience digestive difficulty. Use Stomach-Comfort only for quick, temporary relief. Remember that digestive problems may be a sign of more serious health concerns.
And we have Herbal H-p Fighter designed for just your problem--we 've had excellent results, with this product, too! (This is a contagious so hubby probably needs it too). Nature's
Sunshine spent two intensive years researching the properties of various herbs to create this unique natural formula designed to inhibit the growth of dangerous (Hp)Helicobacterpylori bacteria in the digestive system. Herbal H-p Fighter
contains four herbs that support healthy digestive function.
The first three--pau d'arco extract, clove powder extract, and
Inularacemosa--may inhibit the activity of H. pylori bacteria, while safely leaving
friendly bacteria uninhibited in the intestinal tract. It also contains
deglycyrrhizinated licorice extract (DGLE),capable of helping soothe stomach
irritation and associated discomfort caused by H. pyloribacteria.
Today, herbal practitioners remain enthusiastic about the anti-ulcer powers of this"safe," or deglycyrrhizinated, licorice, called DGL. "This product is wonderful for healing pepticulcers," says Alan R. Gaby, M.D., a Baltimore physician who practices nutritional and natural medicine and is president of the
American Holistic Medical Association. "In some studies it has worked about as well as standard anti-ulcer therapies like Tagamet and Zantac, for a lower cost and with virtually no risk."
We/ve seen clients benefit greatly from these two products in our office!
Q: My wife is 59 and very hard of hearing. What can I do; she acts offended when I try to point it out to her?
A: You should be patient with your wife and encourage her to seek help. Hearing loss is a common disorder in women over 50. Many factors can contribute to hearing loss ;infection, medications, trauma, allergies, and other causes.
16 million Americans, are effected in some way by hearing loss. Hearing loss, comes in various types. Conductive loss is caused by a blockage in the normal sound pathway, which prevents sounds from reaching the brain. A buildup of earwax or an infection can
cause this type of hearing loss. This can usually be over-come by flushing out the ear canal. Nerve deafness (Sensorineural hearing loss ) is caused by a disorder in the middle ear or the nerves inside the ear. Presbycusis, the most common type of hearing loss, is a sensorineural loss and usually affects people over 50. The prefix: " Presby " is Greek for old man ; not that you and your wife are old at your age! Heaven forbid , right!?
All kidding aside, encourage your wife to get a good check-up and then her health-care team can decide what the next steps might be to improve her hearing.
In the meantime...
One very interesting factor to consider:Calcium has been known to help prevent
age-related osteoporosis, reduce blood pressure, and regulate smooth muscle function.
Now researchers suggest that calcium could be a factor in preventing hearing loss. A study
at the University of Georgia, in conjunction with the CDC, studied women ages 60 to 71
that suffered from hearing loss, comparing them with women of normal hearing. The
hearing impaired women had a 25% to 30% lower calcium intake than women with normal hearing. To maintain strong teeth and bones and prevent hearing loss, make sure you receive the Recommended Daily Allowance of 1000 mg. (Reference: FASEB Journal, 1998; 12(5): A878)
You might be interested in knowing a recent study suggests a connection between hearing loss and a deficiency of vitamins B-12 and folate . So you might ask for a blood level check on these vitamins when she goes in for that good check-up, too. (Ref: The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition 3/99)
Q: I have pain that starts after going to bed. I wake in the morning with it. The way I can describe it is that it goes around my rib cage. I have been taking Glucosamine Sulfate ;and MSM for pain and to repair tissues. It has helped a lot. The pain had went away for sometime. The weather recently has been
humid and intermittent with rain, I believe it is effecting me but I'm not sure. I have Lupus, fybromyalgia,
osteoporosis and recently diagonsed with Diabetes 2. Went on a diet and lost 20 pounds. It seem to help
some of my pain also. The question. Is there any herb that could help me? Rhoda from Missouri
A: With fibromyalgia, lupus and the other problems ; I have no doubt that you are in pain.
If you are a Nature's Sunshine member and using THEIR products; I believe that the products you are using will benefit you for the osteoporosis. Unfortunately, there is a class action lawsuit
against many manufactures of Glucosamine Sulfate(for many reasons--some of which are: some contain NO glucosamine; containing various amounts of glucosamine from pill to pill and for containing ingredients NOT on the label); of course , Nature's Sunshine is NOT involved in this lawsuit! In fact, years ago it introduced Glucosamine Sulfate into their product line, then changed the formula (which also contains the herb, Cat's Claw for inflammation) to Glucosamine Hydrochloride as it is more readily used by the body.
Due to recalls over the years and questions of purity, I recommend and use ONLY Nature's Sunshine products (in my 20 year association with them I have yet to receive a re-call).
You might not know, but there are some fine products by Nature's Sunshine for fibromyalgia; here's what I'd consider for fibromyalgia if I had it: Fibralgia ( Stock number 4061-6 ) .
Fibromyalgia (some readers might not know) is Chronic Muscle Discomfort; and millions of Americans suffer from chronic
muscle soreness, stiffness and fatigue. They may experience constant achy muscles in the lower back, neck, shoulders, back of the head, upper chest and thighs. For many, the discomfort is greatest in the morning and accompanied by other sensitivities. The reason for this discomfort may lie in the body?s energy-production system. If the body is deficient in energy-producing fuel, it breaks down muscle protein to create energy. This may cause pain, fatigue and other problems.
Ingredients are pure and simple; Malic acid is found in high concentrations in apples and other fruits and vegetables. The
combination of malic acid and the mineral magnesium provides fuel that generates energy to operate the body.
Nature?s Sunshine has combined these two nutrients in a product called Fibralgia that helps support the structural system, especially the muscles. Fibralgia provides the body/cells with extra malic acid and magnesium so it won?t rob muscle protein to create energy.
In addition to its role in producing energy for the cells, magnesium is used daily to help with the absorption of several vitamins and minerals, to promote bone strength and to regulate nerve impulses.
The NSP Advantage
? Fibralgia is competitively priced.
? NSP Fibralgia passes rigorous NSP quality tests.
Since people with chronic health problems often experience
depression, you may want to consider adding NSP St. John?s Wort Time Release (stock number 653-1) to your daily regimen.
For sleep disorders why not try: Melatonin Extra ? ( Stock No. 2830-4 )
And I am happy to let you know there is a new product out : Nature's Phenyltol that is EXCELLENT for pain ; It contains the amino acid phenylalanine (which I've personally used for years) and white willow (the herb that gave us aspirin) and purple willow, morinda (supports the skeletal system), and wood betony (used for centuries for serious pain --like migrain headache). AND it won't upset your stomach! (It is safe just be sure to abide by the precautions on the label.) The stock number is 1830-7.
Many of my clients control their diabetes with one of the several Nature's Sunshine products for blood sugar levels (there are several to select from; according to your personal needs!
One such product, I might try if I had blood sugar problems might be, NOPAL.

Q: Our family is beset by sinus problem; my husband, son and myself, as well...I hate the prescriptions that just seem to ?dry? out my sinus cavities and I just feel worse. Any natural suggestions?
Actually, Fenugreek & Thyme (a combination--that pulls mucus out, or I should say
really "thins" it out--no blowing or "snorting" draining, etc--as it takes it out through the
lymph system(also from the bronchial, sinus cavities, etc. ).
When I have this problem I take small frequent doses if I ?ve let it get a foothold (2 every 2 hours ) --then finish it off till symptoms are gone as directed on label. The other
product is simply called "Sinus" It is homeopathic and works too--but I like the nutritioal
approach of the herbs--plus
Fenugreek can:
* lower cholesterol (if needed)
* aids in water retention
*bad breath
* broncial irritations &
Thyme can:
* help with gout
* headache
* Lung congestion
* Sciatica
The herbs don't know what you want them to do--they do all this...and MORE !
There is a 3rd product we have success with in our office it is called SN-X, it is one of Dr. John Christopher's formulas, and a lot of our clients like it, too!

Q:I'm 58 and have discovered I have fibroid tumors. Is there anything natural to get rid of them? Would progesterone cream help?
A: 50 percent of women eventually develop benign tumors of the uterus known as fibroids. Most of the time they are too small to cause any noticeable problems, but occasionally they can cause bleeding or pain. If they are large they can cause changes in the shape of the uterus, and even interfere with pregnancy and cause
infertility.
Fibroids can stay the same size, enlarge, or shrink on their own. They are generally quite sensitive to female hormones, changing size during a menstrual cycle.
They often enlarge as a woman approaches her menopausal years and then shrink when she is no longer producing estrogen in high doses.
Treatment for fibroids depends upon whether or not they are causing any problems. Surgical removal of the uterus is the most common operation performed in women, with almost 1 percent undergoing this procedure in the 30-to 54-year-old age group.
1% doesn't sound like much but that equates to some
200,000 hysterectomies each year because of fibroid tumors! If the fibroids are not causing any real problems, observing them is a reasonable approach. They can usually be assessed with regular gynecological examinations.
A diet that is high in fat and low in fiber may contribute to the risk of fibroid development. A recent report shows that overweight women were much more likely to develop uterine fibroids than women who were within a normal weight range. We know that high body fat changes the level of circulating estrogens and seems to contribute to
the growth of uterine tumors. Try to follow a nutritional program that is rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
Recently, hormones that mimic those produced by the brain have been given to women with fibroids, resulting in a chemical menopause. These medicines do cause fibroids to shrink, but may increase the risk of heart disease and osteoporosis.
Progesterone may help to reduce the bleeding associated with fibroids, so if fibroids aren?t huge, and only cause abnormal bleeding, you can probably control them by taking birth control pills.
What?s heavy or abnormal bleeding? Having to change your tampon or pad more than once an hour ? or passing large clots. There are two reasons for this heavy bleeding ; the fibroid prevents contraction of muscles that control bleeding or if fibroids project into the
lining of the uterus the vessels in the fibroid are exposed, and nothing is covering them, so they just keep bleeding. The pill will decrease blood loss and it?s also thought that the progestin in the pill will limit spurts of fibroid growth thought to be caused by estrogen.
A lot of women have learned this, and have decided to use Pro-G-Yam cream with progesterone. Used topically, a very small dose can be quite effective. This will balance out the estrogen levels and might do the trick for you! Pro-G-Yam (stock # 4927-2)
Traditional herbs that have been used to balance a woman's reproductive system include:wild yam and chaste tree (500 mg twice daily).
These herbs all have a long history of safety and can be tried for a few months to see if they have any measurable effect on the fibroids. Wild Yam and Chaste Tree combination (stock number 1108-7)
In addition, I'd suggest that you find a holistically oriented doctor who is not eager to operate unless your fibroids are clearly
creating difficulties.
Q: I have been taking medication for an under-active thyroid; and am depressed, have gained weight, and my hair is coming out. I have asked the doctor to increase the dosage but he feels it is adequate. Is there something natural one can use for low thyroid?
A: Inadequate secretion of thyroid hormone leads to a general slowing of all physical and mental processes. There is a general depression of most cellular enzyme systems and oxidative processes, and as metabolic activity of all cells of the body decreases, reducing
oxygen consumption, decreasing oxidation of nutrients for energy and producing less body heat.
Hypothyroidism causes accelerated atherosclerosis and so coronary artery disease may occur because of deposits of mucopolysaccharides in the heart muscle. This damage may be lessened through the use of cardio-vascular tonics such as Crataegus spp., Ginkgo biloba and Allium sativum.
You'd call this: Hawthorn, Ginkgo and Garlic ! We have a combination HS II (903-9); or Ginkgo/Hawthorn combination (909-3)
My husband (years ago before herbal education--ha-ha!) had problems with his thyroid (and AFTER medical treatment)-- experienced a 40 lb weight gain, and terrible loss of energy. The meds made him feel extreamly nervous; so he didn't use them.
Once into herbs he immediately found relief by taking the TSII (with hops) formula (stock number 1092-0). It combines herbs that contain a high mineral content. He's never lost the weight, but he can function just fine; and without the depression, etc.
I hope this will help!
Q:I have been exposed to hazzardous materials at work--do you
have any suggestions for a good "de-tox" program? -Concerned
A:Yes, actually,
I do! I have used de-toxing programs for about 20 years and have tried a lot of them! The one I like is: Chinese Tiao He Cleanse. It is convientely packaged for use for a ten day
period. It cleanses at "cell-level" and is very effective. (Stock #4000-1).
I have
many clients who like, Enviro-Detox, too. It is a blend in capsule form of "good" things
like blood purifiers (red clover, burdock, yellowdock,)digestive aids ( marshmallow root,
pepsin, fenugreek, ginger, and lactobacillus sporogenes) cleansers (cascara and milk thistle
concentrate, sarsaparilla and echinacea). Works so gently, you can use it daily! (Stock #
864-1)
Q: Dear Herb lady; no question, just a "Thank you so much !" for the advice on bi-polar and for sharing the information just a few short weeks ago!
I wanted to let you know, the GABA, etc., has helped me to have more even steady days and up days, that the "down" days. Thanks again; GDD in WY
(see the previous letter below)
Q: I was diagnoised two years ago with bipolar disease; I have tried the medications and they make me really sick.
Of course, my doctor says "no" herbs are strong enough, but I am anxious to prove him wrong.
You have helped me in the past, so could you please try again? Frantically awaiting your answer! GDD in WY
A: Yes, I remember you, quite well! PLEASE, first and foremost, let me say this is a serious ( and could be life-threating )disorder! Try using something natural WITH your doctor assistance!
I believe everything can be cured, just not everybody!
Like YOU , I would be anxious to prove herbs do work, and give something natural a try!
My clients actually told me about something that they found to be most useful to them.
It's GABA! It is a natural calming and anti-epileptic agent in the brain that is manufactured from the amino acid glutamine and glucose.
I know of at least two double-blind studies that have demonstrated that GABA is beneficial in the treatment of a variety of brain disorders, including anxiety, manic-depressive syndrome (bipolar disorder), epilepsy and schizophrenia. Supplemental intake of GABA was shown to produce a significant elevation of plasma growth-hormone levels and prolactin in one human study.
Furthermore, GABA has been shown to improve sleep cycles leading to more restful sleeping. In addition to it's positive effect on the nervous system, medical studies have also proven GABA to be effective for insomnia, and panic attacks, too.
The GABA we recommend is GABA Plus. helps squelch ?excessive? brain activity and promotes a state of greater relaxation and peace. GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid) is the principal neurotransmitter (brain chemical) required for this benefit and the key ingredient in GABA Plus.
This unique formula also includes glutamine for mental energy, taurine to stabilize and protect brain tissue, spirulina for its abundance of brain nutrients, and passionflower, an herb long used to help balance this system and relieve stress.
Take 1?2 capsules with a meal twice daily. This product is safe for use by adults and children when taken as recommended.
Consult your health care practitioner before using if you are pregnant, nursing or suffer from any medical condition, or are taking any prescription drug.
You might add to that,Omega-3 & 6 fatty acids which have also proven effective alone or in conjunction with prescribed medication(s).
While being a wonderful supplement to improve mental outlook, SAM-e is contraindicated, unfortunately with bipolar disease.
Again, please do not take chances with your health and get the co-operation of your doctor in your endeavor to use the natural, safer alternatives.Remember I recommend the Nature's Sunshine brand as they are the leaders in Quality Control in the industry! (see below as how to order)
May God bless you in your efforts to get well, and stay well. And don't forget to stick with your doctor!

Q: Sammye, can you tell me something about HGH? --wondering in KY
A:By HGH, I suppose you mean Human Growth Hormone? The only one I can recommend is the one my husband takes. He's suffered with chronic fatigue and this is certainly one product he uses for energy when he needs it.
IGF-1 or Insulin Like Growth Factor is essential to stimulating the production of Growth Hormone in adults over 30. HGH hits its peak during adolescence and fades over time as much as 80% by the time we reach our 60's.
Scientists also have discovered that an extract of the velvet on the antlers of a particular species of deer (Cervi parvum cornu) provides IGF-1 and all of its benefits. IGF-1 can help to restore and maintain muscle and bone mass, improves energy and endurance, promotes the growth of new tissue, supports healthy joints, boosts the immune system and supports sexual performance. Researchers have found that deer antler velvet contains eight known growth factors, prostaglandins, nerve-protective fatty acids, prohormones, amino acids and components of cartilage (including glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, collagen type I, collagen type II and minerals).
NSP IGF-1 is concentrated and cold-processed to assure optimum bioactivity. Its liposome delivery system ensures optimum absorption.
The scientific community has been actively pursuing the concept of IGF-1 loss as a direct correlation with the deterioration associated with aging. To correct this The IGF-1 formula of HGH revolution can be used to refresh cell composition and restoration.
To experience the amazing results for yourself, you simply spray (3) sprays in your mouth (2) times per day. Many userss have noticed a wide range of results within their first 90 day cycle on the product.
NSP takes great care to harvest the deer antler velvet in the most humane and careful ways. Each bottle contains at least 2,500 nanograms of IGF-1 and other insulin-like growth factors. Spray twice under your tongue three times daily.
This may sound odd--deer antler--but the TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) has been using deer antler for milliliums! Try it you might LIKE IT!
Q:I was recently diagnosed with bipolar disorder. I find the side
effects of lithium and anti-convulsants to be awful; for instance, I have developed acne all over my body and gained over 20 pounds in two months without the pleasure of the eating usually associated with weight gain! Are there homeopathic or herbal alternatives to
lithium? Are there ways to treat the acne and weight gain which are side-effects? I would greatly appreciate your advice! Thank you.
First of all, stay under a doctor's care. Perhaps you can find one who is knowledgable about natural "alternatives"?
Bi-polar formerly called manic-depressive disorders can be very had to control--but there are ways to manage this condition, too!
"LIV-C" is a combination of several Chinese and Western herbs believed to help lift depression. The formula addresses physical symptoms as well as psychological ones, including loss of appetite, chest constriction, and constipation. The Chinese feel that the
seat of depression is in the liver; these herbs activate and clean the liver. The Western doctors feel depression is a "Chemical imbalance"--this is interesting, since the liver is our "chemical factory". Some of it's primary concerns is to "detoxify" the entire body, aid digestion and regulate hormones. Could this be why the Chinese use such herbs? A second formula to use in conjunction with LIVC, is " ADC," which Chinese name means, "lift the depression"-- we call it Anti-Depression Chinese.
It is more effective when taken in conjunction with regular aerobic exercise, daily practice of a relaxation technique, and a good diet. Another Chinese herbal formula, "HS-C," may help with insomnia or oversleeping, aching limbs, and fatigue. Or when a
" preson's heart just isn't in it."
The herb St. John's wort has been clinically proven to be an MAO inhibitor (MAOs inhibit amines). It works by affectively altering amines to the brain (serotonin, adrenalaine, neodrenaline, dopamine and others). St. John's works as well as Prozac, Effexor, Paxil,
oir Zoloft (w/o the serious side effects). 67% given this herb during depressions bouts experienced a 50% improvement. 3,250 patients noticed NO side effects in trying the herb, according to clinical trials. Recommended dosage from these studies was 900 mg (standardized to 0.3% hypericin. As with other MAO inhibitors it may take 3-4 weeks to begin noticing improvement.
But, we have NO hard fast data that it can help with bi-polar disorder.
Vitamin B complex: We need the catalytic functions including brain function. Sugar is the brain's main fuel, but without B1 the brain can't "burn " it. Defieciencies cause: anxiety, depression even suicidal episodes. (In addition, cut down on refined sugars cany, soft drinks, desserts, etc at these deplete B reserves).
Mega doses of B complex acts to inhibit the enzyme MAO.
B3; 14 out of 15 deficient in B3 suffered no depressive episodes after taking mega doses of B complex with B3. Improvement was within a few days.
Folic Acid part of the B complex helps catalyze the synthesis of most mood-regulating neurochemicals. Over a dozens studies show 3 out of four depressed presons were low in this part of the B complex (the more sever the depression the lower the nutrient) .
Choline is also part of the B complex and a precusor for the important neurotransmitter, accetylcholine. This chemical affects moods causing uphoric or manic behavior.
Colloidal Minerals: Lithium and Rubidium have been successfully used for sever depression. Lithium is especially good for unipolar depression. With the mineral lithium the high suicide rate among manic-depressants fell drastically. It tranquilized the depressed
persons .
Rubidium: Suspected of bein an essential nutrient, it appears to be a potent,mood-modifying elements. Several studies by major universites found it to be the ideal stimulant needed for depressives who are slowed down or apathic. (These mineral are in NSP's
Colloidal Minerals).
Exercise should be a part of any therapy for depression; it improves blood flow to the brain, elevates mood, and relieves stress. Even if used alone, it can often bring startling results. Studies show that jogging for 30 minutes three times a week can be as effective as psychotherapy in treating depression. Pick an exercise you like and do it daily, if possible. Any exercise is fine; the more energetic and aerobic, the better.
Please keep on getting treatment; and see our page on PREVIOUSLY ASKED QUESTIONS--best wishes toward getting well!
Q: KY My daughter ( aged 11) has the worst smelling feet! she is the ?brunt? of her brothers jokes! How can I help her over-come this...is something missing in her diet?
A: A lack of b-complex causes stinky feet, which can cause stinky shoes. Remember,
stress, sugar, white flour, etc. all burn B vitamins. I would try 1 capsule of B-Complex 2-3 times
a day; and make sure she has a supplement with zinc (no more than 25 mg for children) in it eah day!
Q: I began taking EFA?s (flax) for my dry skin as you mentioned, but now I?ve gained
a few pounds. Could this be because of the flax seed oil?
A: I don?t think so Essential Fatty Acids (EFA?s) are GLA?s Omega 3and Omega 6 . There are 50 nutrients considered essential for life; one of these is Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs).
None of these EFAs can be produced by the body, therefore, it must be added to the daily diet, or one's
health will suffer. The key to the effectiveness of these EFAs is gamma linoelic acid (GLA). GLA is a
parent compound to omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. GLA is essential to the production of
prostaglandin's. Our bodies take linoleic acid (abundant in vegetables) and change it into GLA and then
to arachadonic acid. Arachadonic acid in then used to produce prostaglandins. These are hormone-like
substances that regulate blood pressure and clotting.
Since linoleic acid is in vegetables, one might wonder why supplement with GLA? A diet high in
saturated fats and processed vegetable oils (grocery store variety) inhibits the body's ability to change
linoleic acid to GLA.
Natural sources of GLA include: Evening Primrose Oil, Black Currant Oil, Omega-3 Fish Oil, and Flax
Seed Oil.
Evening Primrose oil: Early English settlers cultivated his for it's nut-flavored root. It has been
discovered it is useful in a wide-range of health problems: obesity, PMS, arthritis, MS, eczema, heart
disease/high blood pressure, alcoholism and schizophrenia.
Black Currant oil: Has been used for basically the same. It has higher concentrations of GLA
and is considered less expensive because of this.
Omega-3 Fish oil: Arthritis, weight-loss, skin and heart disease. Many find the taste and smell
objectionable.
Flax Seed oil: Lignan contained in flax is being studied by scientist world-wide. One reason is
that lignan once ingested is converted to compounds that compete with estrogen. Therefore flushing
excess estrogen (linked to high incidence of colon, prostate, and breast cancers) from the body. Lignan
has been shown to be anti-tumor, anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-fungal as well. Many women
supplementing with flax notice improved nail strength, shiny hair, better skin texture, and lack of
cravings for fat/junk foods. Recent studies confirm that brains of persons with Alzheimer's disease have a
deficiency of EFAs. EFAs are necessary for formation and function of the brain and nervous system
among other vital functions. EFAs play a key role in cellular membrane structure and function. It has
been hypothesized that lack of EFAs in Alzheimer suffers causes "leaky" brain cellular membranes
allowing passage of toxic compounds to collect, ultimately causing plaques associated with loss of
memory and cognitive function. A 12 week study with lupus patients showed decreased inflammation
in blood vessels while using flax.
Extra virgin Greek olive oil: Beside it delicious (not heavy or oily) taste possible therapeutic
benefits include: It is good for the heart and blood pressure. Thins the blood and prevents clots. It raised
good HDL cholesterol, and lowers the bad (LDL). 1 TB. wipes out the cholesterol raising effects of 2
eggs.
4-5 TBS daily improved the blood profiles of heart attack patients. 2-3 TBS daily lowers B/P in most
people. Contains compounds that retard cancer and aging. And is known to lower blood sugar rates.
Let?s review:
EFA's : Decrease Cravings for fatty foods and Sweets
Stokes Metabolic rate
Creates Satiation (feeling of fullness and satisfaction)
Regulates Blood sugar
Regulates insulin
Increases oxygen consumption

Q: I would like to have some information from you
concerning herbs for my daughter who is 29 years old. She has always had a great deal of
discomfort with her cycles and I feel confident herbs can help alleviate some of this
discomfort. Please advise some daily applications as well as maybe some monthly choices.
Thanks
A:Assuming she is healthy, why don't we look to her diet? Many women
suffer if they add salt to their diet as much as 10 days prior to their period (salt helps us
"hold onto" water), as we have a sodium/potassium pump and adding more potassium foods
will assist her in this.
Our clients feel Monthly Maintaince (stock # 1812-0) really
assists them in preventing cramping as it will balance the sodium/potassium ratio. It also
contains vitamins, and a host of wonderful herbs(Dong quai, peony, hoelen, licorice, ginger, gardenia, etc.) to assist in just this kind of situation! Taken 10 days before the onset of menstruation, many of our clients tell me it is "just what they needed!" And why not look over at our aromatherpy page
for additional suggestions!?
Q:I am seeing so much about aromatherapy. Is it just
hype--or is there something to it?--Susan
And this similar one:
Q: HOW
do you use Essential Oils? If I purchase the herbs, how do I "introduce" them to my sense
of smell? Simmer the oil in a pan on the stove? Add it to my tea?Internal, external? Do I
use oil, or dried herbs, or, or...? One of my dear sisters and I were having a discussion on
it yesterday, and we don't understand how to use them in "aromatherapy." We are very
interested in trying this out.And thank you for keeping me on your Sage Advice mailing list---I enjoy your
updates very much!
A: Have you ever gone into someone's home and smelled an
apple pie baking and got a "relaxed"--even "good" feeling? You were reacting to the
smells and it "transported " you temporarily to a good time with Mom, or perhaps
Grandma!
You might say aromatherapy was man's first medicine. Scents of
essential oils can promote certain moods and states within the body, and the conscious
mind.
Isn't that why a lot of women wear perfume on special occasions?Think
about it. Different aromas cause the body and mind to receive specific influences to
achieve "balance";science has know that for years--women have too! Aren't husbands
romantic in the KITCHEN?
Sure they are! One of the biggest libido boosters has
been found to be cinnamon buns! Think about it--the aroma is "Warm/spicy/smoky and
has been found to be: anti-depressant, energizing, promotes feelings of love (home, etc)
and gives physical energy
NEVER orally take Essential Oils (EO's)! It can be
fatal as women have found out trying them for the purpose of aborting their offspring!
Don't know where to start? Try one of our wonderful EO blends--or try these
suggestions!
Inhalation therapy - For steam inhalation, add 1-5 drops of oil to 1-2
cups of boiling water. Inhale the vapors with your head about a foot away from the
solution. Alternate breathing in the vapors and fresh air. For ambient inhalation, add 1-3
drops of oil to a tissue or coton ball and place the item about 1-2 feet from your nose.
Again alternately inhale the vapors.
Massage - add 2-5 drops of essential oil to
one ounce or more of carrieroil. Massage onto yourself or have someone massage you.
DO NOT GET INTO EYES OR OTHER SENSITIVE AREAS!
Relaxing or
invigatoring bathing - add 2-5 drops of essential oil to one ounce of carrier oil. Add to
your bath water, mixed into the water well before climbing into the tub. Lie back and
relax. Hot Tub 10 drops; swish
For use as a room freshener, add 3-5 drops of essential
oil to 1-2cups of bowling water and place around the room. BE CAREFUL TO KEEP
OUT OF THE REACH OF PETS. General household freshening is easy. Just add a few
drops of oil to the trash containers, vacuum bags, drains, or on a cotton ball to place in
drawers and closets. House hold uses include room freshening, general freshening, andas
an insect repellent.
Lavender, and peppermint are natural insect repellents. Place a
few drops on window sills and doorways. Again please be careful of pets. Hint: Check out
the new page!
Q:I recently read that FDA has seized
the ingredients to make the red rice compound, Hongqu--didn't a judge in Utah rule it was a food?--
wondering in Maine
A:Thank you for your interest! The answer to your question is "No" and "Yes!"judge in Utah did rule on a similar product--stating it was a food,
and that he thought it could benefit those with cirulatory disorders. And "Yes" we can no longer purchase Hongqu, because it is being held up from production--just like the product you mentioned in the Utah ruling. In the meantime see the information on GUGGUL Lipids below.
Q: We have a new baby, and I just can't seem to produce enough breast-milk!
What suggestions do you have? Nervous new Mom
A: First suggestion, is "try" to
R-E-L-A-X ! Great advice--RIGHT? Then do what women had done for 100's of years
use CATNIP & FENNEL--helps makes the baby less fussy/gassy/colic,(stock # 3195-3).
BLESSED THISTLE,(stock # 100-1) and MARSHMALLOW (stock # 440-0) increases
the quantity of milk! And don't forget these:
1) adequate rest for MOM
2) lots
of calories, especially fats
3) lots of water (1/2 - 1 oz of water per pound of body
weight per day)
4) alfalfa or chlorophyll ! My sister is a mid-wife and she tells me they
have had clients whose babies had been weaned for more that 4 months relactate using
liquid chlorophyll !(stock #1683-7)
And lots of adoptive moms use these herbs
and lactate when they had never been pregnant before! Isn't herbalism wonderful? Best of
wishes !
Q: You ve helped me before...maybe you can again. I have been to Mayo Clinic,Vanderbuilt--to scores of doctors, health food stores, herbalist, etc. I have some sort of problem that began in Novermber, and I took steriods for it. I have NEVER gotten better---just worse. I have developed depression because of this health problem, and the prescription for the depression helps me sleep, but makes my health condition WORSE! At your suggestion, and my M.D. s I have begun taking St. John's wort. I know you told me it could take weeks to work--so I went back on the prescription! Is there anything else that might work faster? My doctor said nothing else in the natural health field has been studied. I need to lift my spirits so I can get well PHYSICALLY! --name with held
A: Yes, there is a wonderful product I have worked with for some years now. And since I fancy myself as someday writing a book on Chinese herbs I got a lot of my research on these individual herbs from information found in medical books like:The American Journal of Pharmaceutical Education, Bensky,D. and Gambel, A. Chinese Herbal Medicine: Materia,Mortin JF; Major Medicinal plants;Botany,Culture and Uses , Perry L. Medicinal Plants of of Eastern and South Eastern Asia and many others .
Here s a little of what I learned from these and other medical texts:And here is what I have written about one formula *AD-C, which I call Anti-Depression-Chinese"Formula. It is a synergistic formula of 18 different herbs--the two key herbs being Bupleurum and Cypress.
Bupleurum ( or Chai hu). Bupleuri falcatum, or Chinese
throughwax , is an important component in various prescriptions in Chinese Traditional Medicine.
It has been used for centuries to resolve liver problems, and restore stagnant liver and gallbladder/spleen energy.
The TM practioneers teach the liver can repressed emotions, but particularly sadness and anger, hence this formula's Chinese name, literally means, "RELIEVE the DEPRESSION".
Bupleurum has also been shown to enhance the activity of
the adrenalcortex hormones, that exert a profound effect upon the
metabolism of glucose. These hormones can increase serum glucose levels and induce a state very similarly to diabetes. They can also exert a catabolic effect on skin, muscle and fat.
Bupleurum enhances both hormone production of thepituitary and adrenal, by exerting beneficial action on the pituitary, causing an increased out put of ACTH, and the release of glycocorticoids. In contrast, when corticosteriod DRUGS are given, the adrenal glands get smaller and lose much of their activity. Bupleurum has been shown to prevent adrenal atrophy caused by corticosteroid drugs. In addition, other therapeutic activities:lowering cholesterol, preventing liver damage, improving liver function in chronic hepatitis, andacts as a mild sedative/pain relieving substance.
Cyperus or Xiang Fu, used medically as a sedative and to treat rheumatism The rhizomes has acomplex composition and is an elixir
and a panacea, or "good for everything, " herb, say the Chinese.
It is believed to be beneficial for mental/nervous disorders, epilepsy, and has been used as an aphrodisiac as it is known to stimulate hormone secretions .
Ginger is excellent source of trace minerals. And Gambir herb
has been used for centuries to treat: fear/phobias, hypertension, dizziness.
Hoelen herb contains bitter chemicals that reduce blood sugar
levels,( as well as, platycondon root, also in thisformula) and have a sedative effect.Bamboo leaf used in the far East for to reduce nervous tension, also.
This formula is excellent for those who lack energy. It will help those depressed, fatigued, lack vitality and can be used for impotency. It will strengthen the immune system, liver and those who are in a weakened condition and run down. Degenerative diseases and emotional stress.
I repeat: The great majority of this information I found in MEDICAL text books written on Chinese/Oriental medicine! I supsect there is plenty of information out there if one just takes the time to search it out!
I have had clients tell me AD-C worked for them in hours or days!Keep on searching there are answeres out there. "...keep on seeking and you shall find." -- spoken by Jesus Christ
